You and hundreds of your filthy music-loving users have persisted and now I am listening to Ratatat. Are you happy now, innernets? Please stop it with the posts every two days about how good Ratatat is. I have learned my lesson and will assimilate much more quickly in the future.

As a side note, I listened to two albums last night with my ipod headphones. Then I listened to two MUCH BETTER albums with my HD497s today. So... stay away from those little white earbuds of pain and misjoyment.

its teh best! they are the rawkasauruses. hey have you heard the remix ratatat album? its pretty hot :D (ratatat beats vs. ghost face killahhh, as a single example)

I haven't heard the remix album yet but I fear being overwhelmed by good music so I'll put that one off until I'm less psyched about these two albums :P Some of them feel so... 8-bit. It's where I'm most comfortable.

Classics is making my top 10 this year.

Have you tried Grado headphones? Even their cheap ones sound really good. They're so clear that I have to re-rip MP3s now cuz I can hear if they are messed up. Only drawback is Grados are open, so everyone in the room can hear what you're listening to (and they won't work on a plane). I have the SR80 which is one of their cheap line.

The day I got my HD497s I was fully prepared to walk out of the store with SR80s. I had playlist set up on my ipod with all the songs I wanted to try out on the SR80s and I tried them on the HD497s just for kicks - in my opinion the HD497s sounded better so I got those.

Cool. Are they comfy? Cuz mine took some getting used to, and still hurt if I use them all day.

Any recommendations for closed ones that are supposed to sound good (and aren't super expensive)? Laura needs a pair to use in the office.

They took a while to get used to but they're OK using them all day now (other than ear-squish because they're on-ear and not around-ear). I had a pair of $20 sony ones before this which were great for $20 and closed.
